It is with great sadness that the club have to report that Roger Bell has passed away after a brief battle with a returning lymphoma. Roger was a legend in the club and a true gentleman. As membership secretary and treasurer, he was many member’s first point of contact from the 90s through to 2017. Roger was also a phenomenal fell runner himself. He came to the sport relatively late and achieved many great results, most notably in the 90s when he was crowned British and English V50 Champion in 1991 and English Champion again in 1993.
A great ambassador for the sport, Roger organised Langdale Horseshoe Fell Race for 15 years up to 2016 and steered the club through one of its greatest achievements as the main organiser when the club hosted the British Relays in 2018.
Roger will be remembered by many people in many ways, but within the club we might think of his ready smile, infectious laugh, tatty old AAC vest and the same short pencil and folded paper in his back pocket that served as the club membership and finances paperwork for so long!
He had time for everyone and was generous to the core. As fine a man as has ever lived. There will be a big hole in the club now he has moved on. Our thoughts are with Gillie and his family.
