Enter on the day
Race start 12 noon (not 11.00 as stated on FRA site – we want to allow plenty of time for folk to get here; it’s still half term and traffic has been heavy at Troutbeck Bridge due to roadworks)
Final registration at 11.40am
Cost £7 includes food
Perfect to test the results of your hard winter training and as an early season sharpener, this race replaces the Loughrigg – Silver Howe Race. So, as one chapter closes another opens…
Parking – Parking will be on the Ambleside Sports field on the A591 between Ambleside and Rydal GR370055 and will be signposted. The charge will be £1 per car and will be open from 9.30am. Please note that it is a 1KM WALK FROM THE PARKING FIELD TO RACE REGISTRATION at the Badger Bar – please allow plenty of time. If you arrive at the parking field much later than 11.15am it is unlikely you will have the time to register and get to the start in time.
PLease stick to the more “hardstanding” areas (access bits for the hydro scheme). It is currently really, really muddy and therefore, access to the parking field will be via the turn off at the lodge, entering the field at the top and exiting at the bottom in a one way system, allowing gravity to assist!
PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE LANE BY RYDAL CHURCH OR IN THE BADGER BAR OR RYDAL HALL CAR PARKS. Doing so will have serious implications for the future of our races.
Registration – Registration will be at the Badger Bar GR364062. The cost will be £7 and will include soup and bread, cake and a hot drink. Runners are welcome at the bar and to use the toilets but please stay out of the ‘posh’ part of the hotel with the fancy stripy carpets! It is A 500M WALK TO THE START so allow yourself plenty of time to get there well before 12.00. Final registration will be at 11.40am.
Race start/finish and Kit – The race will start and finish on the higher track by the shore of Rydal Water at GR359060. There will be a random kit check at the start so please arrive by 11.55am and make sure you have full FRA kit: waterproof (not pertex) jacket with hood and bottoms, hat (Buff fine), gloves, map, compass (with or without ability to use it!), whistle and food. We have experienced some beautiful weather for this race but more usually, it has been cold, snowy and claggy so please come to the race with an additional warm layer. We will consider the weather conditions on the Saturday evening and on the ground on Sunday morning and may ask you to carry an additional layer. On a serious note, as many of us know, hypothermia sneaks up on you and can become pretty dangerous. Many folk have gone awry on this one in the clag in the past and ended up with quite a long trip back having made unscheduled visits to various parts of Langdale – could be a wee bit grim in little more than your pants, vest and jacket!
The course – 7 miles 2100ft (11km 700m) – The course runs up to Loughrigg summit then to Silver Howe summit and back the same way. The first section to the summit of Loughrigg will be fully flagged and runners must stick to this route – see the maps below. Follow the flags out on the large track to Rydal cave then climb up the broken path to the left of the cave. This good path rises up the hillside towards the skyline, trending rightwards. As this path flattens out there is a boggy section which must be crossed and the path takes a right turn here and soon passes some old quarry workings. After a flat section the path rises steeply and rockily as Loughrigg summit approaches. Loughrigg summit is the first checkpoint GR346052.
From the summit you can choose your own route to Silver Howe summit (or follow someone who looks like they know what they are doing but choose carefully!). This is checkpoint two GR325066. The route is then reversed and Loughrigg is climbed on the return leg (checkpoint three GR346052 ) before following the flags down past the cave to where you started by Rydal Water. There will probably be a marshal at the top of the Red Bank road crossing but this is not a checkpoint.

Prizes – There will be individual prizes for the first 3 finishers in the Open M and F category as well as first place prizes in other age categories. Prizes will be around 2.45pm at the Badger Bar. In true Ambleside AC tradition, there will be many spot prizes to hand out so get another brew/pint, linger and enjoy the craic. Look forward to seeing you there:-)
