Another fine, dry night for the race this year saw Ambleside’s Simon Stainer use his downhill pace to leave Tom Addison after the pair turned together at the summit. Simon’s time of 27.50 was 50 seconds outside Nick Sharp’s record set in extremely dry conditions last year. The effects of the wet underfoot conditions can be seen in the fact that this year only 6 runners ran under the magical 30 minute mark, compared to 14 in 2007. Mr Consistent Ben Abdelnoor continues his run of third places in this race after finishing in this position for the third year running. A good run by the still improving Matt Reedy in 4th saw Ambleside take the team prize in convincing style.

The Vet 40 category saw a very close race between Chris Reade and Gary Thorpe. 3 seconds separated the pair at the finish with renaissance man ‘Thorpedo’ coming out on top. Anthony Labram had a good run to finish third. Allan Millar of Kendal was 1st vet 50 and David Harrison of Keswick was first V60. Two V70 runners completed the race with John Rutter of Keswick coming out on top with an impressive time of 49.20. I owe John an apology for not awarding him a prize at the prizegiving. Rosie Stuart was a clear winner of the ladies race in 34.52 from Louise Roberts who was a minute behind. Alison Richards of Todmorden had a solid run to finish third. Previous course record holder Lyn Thompson of Keswick was first V50 lady and 5th lady overall. Cath Musetti was first V40 in 6th overall and Keswick took the ladies team prize.

It was great to see a wealth of young talent at the race, almost exclusively from Helm Hill. If these runners stay in the sport surely this club will be a force to reckon with in years to come.

That just leaves my thanks to all the helpers from Ambleside AC who gave up their evening to help out. A particular mention must go to Jane, Murray and John on the fell, Helen and Ken at results and registration and finally to Michelle for the fantastic cakes and hard work all evening – and not making me feel too guilty for running in the race myself!

Finally I must mention the extremely generous support of the KD Sports shop in Ambleside. Every year there is an increasing amount of winners and spot prizes to give out and this is solely down to the support of ‘Mr Ambleside’ Mark Blackburn who owns the shop.
