The first
British Championship race this year will be Slieve
Bearnagh in the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland.
The club has a fine tradition of visits to these Irish
races, which are always excellent.
The race is
short and fairly rough, covering 4 or 5 miles. It sets
off from near the idyllic and picturesque seaside town
of Newcastle, about 1 hour south of Belfast.
As in the
past, the club has agreed to subsidise the trip to the
tune of £300 which makes it a reasonably priced weekend
away. We will set off at around lunchtime on Friday 31st
March and get the ferry from Stranraer that evening. The
race is on the Saturday morning and there is usually a
decent night out to be had in Newcastle to help drown
sorrows or celebrate glory.
We will then
travel home on Sunday, returning to the Lakes around
6ish. There is a good campsite a couple of miles outside
Newcastle at which we got very reasonable rates last
time – thanks to Dan G! For those who don’t fancy
camping there are loads of B and B’s in town that you
could book yourselves and meet up with the campers when
you choose. I will put more information about prices on
here when I get it.
A
non-refundable deposit of £20 will be required to secure
a place – get this to me by mid-February at the latest
please. You can hand this deposit to Roger Bell or Dan
Duxbury or send by post to Dan Duxbury, 1 West Grove,
Kendal, Cumbria, LA94PN
