2008 Club
Championships
FINAL RESULTS
The club
championship will follow the same format this year. 9
local races make up the series, of which your best 5
points scores at any distances make up your score at the
end of the season. The prize giving will be at the Xmas
Do this year. Age categories and scores as always - 1st
21 points, 2nd 19 points, 3rd 18 points etc
The series kicks off with Loughrigg at the start of
April. This early season evening race from Millans Park
is the perfect showcase for your early season form (or
lack of it). A week later is the Club Loughrigg
Orienteering event. This year Julia Laverack is taking
over the course planning and she has promised to make it
reasonably straightforward.
At the start of May is the 9 mile Coniston Race. The
‘death or glory’ descent of the Old Man is well worth a
recce if you want to take maximum points here. The fast
and flat Hutton Roof Crags race is on 24th May. The
first ‘B’ category race to be included in the club
champs for many a year this should appease those who
complain the series is always made up of rough lakes
horror shows – happy Gary?
Next is the Blencathra race from Mungrisedale is on a
Wednesday evening in early June. The Great Lakes Run is
a new race to be organised by the Lakes Runner shop and
promises to be a classic. The course has yet to be
finalised but it looks like being a horseshoe based
around the river Esk starting somewhere in Eskdale –
Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, Great End, Scafells. Rough and
nasty; dare you go up Broad Stand?
Cancelled
Lakeland Country Fair in Torver has a 6.5 mile race up
Coniston Old Man in mid August. Will Nick Fish’s record
go this year?
Cancelled
Some navigation ability will definitely be
required at the Lake District Mountail Trial on 14th
September. Full course only for points in the club
champs I’m afraid.
A Yorkshire classic is back on the calendar in the form
of the 12 mile Whernside Race. Hopefully it will still
be on the same day as the 3 peaks cyclocross race so you
can watch them all hurtle down Whernside as you slog up.
This Saturday race is a good candidate for a booze bus,
volunteers to drive see me please - it’s definitely not
my turn!
That just leaves everyone’s favourite short race
Dunnerdale at the beginning of November to round off the
series.
