Boobydoo Bonanza

Report by Jane Reedyn

On the weekend of the 22nd September an intrepid team of six of us set off to take part in an adventure race organised by Trailplus, sponsored by Helly Hansen, Boobydoo (Barrie and Jane’s company) and Up and Running.

Our two teams comprised of Hazel Jones, Becky Cash and myself, then, Sue Owen, Britta and Helen Ferguson. The event centre was at Cannock Chase, Staffordshire- already some of us were out of our comfort zone.

We all had to complete the activities together; kayaking, biking, running and some assault course style thing. My husband had been subjected to a couple of sessions with all Boobydoo women on the lake in boats in an attempt to practise our paddling (hmm!). Thanks Matt, you coped well.

After a bit of inside information from team manager Barry, and last minute fossicking with kit, we donned orange vests and lined up with the masses. Looking a little like something from a tango ad we all awaited the mile and half run to start.

The run passed quickly; from there it was on the bikes for 10 plus miles (at a guess) o through the forest, some of which was quite technical and a lot of fun. Having survived that we left the bikes and ran about 3 miles, through more forest tracks to the canal where we met our inflatable canoe. Two were to go in the canoe for the first paddle, the challenge being they only had 1 paddle, while the other team member walked alongside, on the return the ‘walker’ had to paddle – both people in the canoe then having a paddle.

Following this was the return run to the bike, not pleasant after trying to paddle at speed in an inflatable canoe around other canoes and the odd barge. The final bike stage was less technical and took us back to the event centre, where the last activity awaited. The comedy part, for spectators anyway, involved Keith Chegwin style activities; wooden skis, bags, legs (see photos!), cargo nets and greased up A-frames. With some rather unique efforts we succeeded in completing these.

We all finished on a high, it was a great event, well organised, supported (by both spectators and competitors) and good to be part of a winning team!

Hazel, Becky and I won the ladies prize, sponsored by Jane and Barry, coming 11th overall, and Sue, Britta and Helen were 4th ladies team.

A huge thank-you to Jane and Barrie and all the girls involved for a great weekend.

Bring on the next one!
