AL/12 miles/4000 ft - Saturday 16th September 2006

Normal service was resumed for this year's Three Shires Race. 265 runners turned up to our usual wall-to-wall sunshine; sadly absent for the last two years. A little bit warm for race winner Nick Sharp, who would surely have broken two hours under cooler conditions. Runner up Alastair Dunn from Helm Hill provoked the question :- 'Which is the top club in Kendal?' and Helene Diamantides turned in a vintage performance in 13th place overall, so winning the Lakeland Classics Trophy - not bad for a vet!

Lower down the field the two local pub landlords, Ian Stephenson from the Shires itself, and Neil Walmsley of the Old Dungeon Ghyll, fought out a ding dong battle until Ian called time on his Langdale rival. Ian, who invented this race back in 1983, was to have presented the prizes, but was better employed pulling large quantities of pints for the thirsty queue.

The race went smoothly thanks to the excellent team of marshalls and helpers - almost 20 of whom are needed each year. So the message from me is - if you've raced all summer without helping out at an event then think on! Ring your local race organiser RIGHT NOW and offer your services for next year - in fact ring any race organiser you like!

And one final message. In spite of the sunshine we had to start looking for one runner who was in fact safe and sound. If you retire from a race please make sure that as well as reporting to the nearest marshall you also report at the finish - without going through the funnel!
